The Lead Mechanical Engineer supports the Engineering Manager while providing technical leadership and oversight to a team of mechanical engineers on mining and mineral processing projects. This role is responsible for driving the successful delivery of mechanical engineering scope, resolving complex technical issues, developing execution plans, and ensuring all project requirements are achieved. The Lead Mechanical Engineer plays a key role in guiding the team to deliver high-quality engineering solutions while meeting project objectives related to safety, quality, cost, and schedule. A typical day:- Develop and manage the mechanical engineering scope, deliverables, budget, schedule, and project execution plans.
- Prepare and maintain scope of work documentation, engineering work packages (EWPs), and resource forecasts throughout the project lifecycle.
- Lead, review, approve, and support the development of mechanical engineering deliverables, including specifications, datasheets, drawings, and technical evaluations.
- Oversee vendor engagement, procurement packages, and technical input to support successful equipment and material acquisition.
- Establish project-specific engineering procedures, design tools, software requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
- Coordinate, assign, and monitor mechanical engineering activities to ensure quality, productivity, and adherence to project objectives.
- Represent the mechanical discipline in design reviews and multidisciplinary coordination meetings, ensuring alignment across all engineering functions.
- Promote safety, quality, ethical engineering practices, and compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and quality assurance requirements.
Successful candidates will have:- B.Sc./B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering with P.Eng. registration (or eligibility for registration with EGBC) and extensive experience supporting mining and mineral processing projects.
- 15+ years of project engineering experience, including mechanical engineering leadership on large, complex, multidisciplinary industrial projects.
- Proven ability to lead and manage engineering teams to achieve quality, cost, safety, and schedule objectives.
- Strong expertise in mechanical engineering execution, project planning, deliverable management, and discipline workflows across all project phases.
- Solid understanding of interdisciplinary coordination, procurement, contracting, commissioning, and project delivery methodologies.
- Technical knowledge of mineral processing equipment, mechanical systems, 3D data-centric design tools, and engineering management systems.
- Excellent leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and mentoring skills, with experience developing junior engineers and promoting team performance.
- Strong client-focused approach with the ability to quickly understand project requirements, delegate effectively, and drive successful project outcomes in mining and processing environments.
